Navigating pet travel challenges

The Struggles of traveling with Milo

When we moved from Canada to Argentina in 2022 for a work opportunity, I spent countless hours researching what to expect while traveling with Milo. I hoped to find detailed information about the process—what happens at each airport, how the dogs are handled, whether they are given breaks, and if the temperature in the cargo hold is regulated for their safety. Unfortunately, I found very little—nothing that could provide true insight or peace of mind about Milo’s journey.

The unknowns of long-distance travel

Our trip spanned multiple flights from Calgary to Buenos Aires. For all those hours, I had no information on how Milo was doing. Was he being handled with care? It was unsettling not knowing whether my furry companion was okay. The lack of transparency and the seeming disregard for Milo’s well-being made me realize just how much needs to change to make travel safer and more transparent for pets and their families.

A new beginning

Joining the local rescue community

A few months after settling in Argentina, I joined a local rescue community that works with limited resources to rehabilitate dogs in need. Bonita’s case was the first that truly captured my attention (discover her story here). Her condition was dire, and she required immediate care. As a foreigner in a country where some areas can be risky, I hesitated. But after calling my neighbor, a fellow dog lover, and confirming where we’d take Bonita after the vet, we decided to act.

A wake up call

The stray dogs crisis

When we went to pick up Bonita, I was shocked by the number of dogs roaming the streets—skin and bones, desperately searching for food. It was a wake-up call to the scale of the problem. Rescuing Bonita was just the beginning, and I knew I had to do more. That’s how Colitas Urbanas was born—focused on finding permanent homes for rehabilitated stray dogs, giving them a chance at a better life.

Combining passion with purpose

Starting Colitas Urbanas highlighted the need for more resources—particularly financial—to make a meaningful impact. This inspired me to create wag trips, combining my experience traveling with Milo and my passion for improving pet travel while supporting rescue efforts for dogs in need.
